Eye disease risk should be taken seriously, especially as you age. Some eye diseases risk diminishing your eyesight; some can even cause blindness if left unmanaged or not diagnosed early enough.
We’re dedicated to uncovering the signs of eye disease and creating effective treatment plans to help preserve your vision. Through thorough testing and understanding your lifestyle, we can determine your eye disease risk and help prevent vision loss and long-term damage.
The most common eye diseases are glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye disease. Many eye diseases affect either the retina or the cornea, including conditions like keratoconus.
There are several symptoms associated with eye diseases. Each eye disease presents different symptoms, and no two people with the same eye disease exhibit the exact same symptoms. Generally, double vision, blurry vision, color changes, increased flashes and floaters, and spots in your field of vision are signs of eye diseases.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, which is responsible for ensuring clear central vision. Dark areas in your central vision increased blurriness, and difficulty recognizing peoples’ faces are all early warning signs of AMD.
Cataracts are caused by a protein buildup on the eye’s inner lens. Age is the most significant factor relating to cataracts—by age 80, most people will have developed cataracts. Smoking, alcohol use, sun exposure, and health issues like diabetes can increase your risk of developing cataracts.
There are at least 8 different types of glaucoma; however, the most common forms are open-angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma accounts for 90% of cases. We can help manage open-angle glaucoma through treatment to preserve vision; angle-closure glaucoma is considered an emergency and should be treated immediately when symptoms occur. Symptoms can include sudden vision loss, flashes and floaters, and severe eye pain.
Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!
Surgery was amazing. Colors are bright and vivid. Everything is sharp. White is white, not off-white. Could not see like this with glasses I have worn for 67 years. Thank you, Dr. Santamaria and God bless you.
My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon. Praise God - it was the best move I made. He and his wonderful staff diagnosed a cataract in each eye. Why wasn't it seen before? I went every year for a check up. I now see better than I EVER did. I don't need my glasses. Driving is wonderful. I can read the scores on TV - It's a whole new world. I am so happy and so grateful to Dr. Santamaria and his staff! On top of their expertise, his staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and will answer any questions and concerns! Thank you again.
