An eye emergency could include a scratched cornea, chemical exposure, foreign objects in the eye, bruised eye, allergic reaction, or flashes and floaters. These injuries could lead to an infection or, in other cases, can cause long-term damage like vision loss.
Is Sudden Vision Loss an Emergency?
Sudden vision loss is an emergency. Sudden vision loss can be caused by abnormalities in the cornea or lens, damage to the retina, or corruption of the nerves that deliver signals from the eye to the brain.
What Do Flashing Lights in the Eyes Mean?
Flashes can appear suddenly. In many cases, flashes signal an issue with the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Retinal problems include macular degeneration, retinal tears, detachment, and more.
How Do You Know When an Eye Injury is Serious?
Signs of a severe eye injury include sudden vision changes, reduced eye movement, blood in the white part of the eye called the sclera, and pain with eye movements. If you are unsure whether an eye injury is serious, you should immediately contact an emergency center to seek medical attention.
What is a Corneal Abrasion?
A corneal abrasion is a scratch or cut on the transparent outer portion of the eye called the cornea. Corneal abrasions can be caused by foreign objects entering the eye, like dust, dirt, or other forms of debris. Minor corneal abrasions can heal over a few days; however, we may prescribe eye drops to ensure your eye surface is hydrated.
What Are The Signs of an Eye Infection?
Eye infection symptoms include itchiness, burning sensations, light sensitivity, increased tearing, and general discomfort. You can often treat an eye infection with antibiotic eye drops, though crucial first to get a professional assessment before pursuing any treatment options.
What Can I Do to Relieve Eye Pain?
If you notice eye pain, don’t try to relieve it by yourself. Call your optometrist or visit them for an eye emergency appointment so you can get professional treatment recommendations focused on providing you with relief.

My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon.
