Diabetes prevents the body from making or using insulin. With those reduced insulin levels, blood sugar increases. This increased blood sugar increases the risk of developing eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma.
We can understand how diabetes affects your eyes and make recommendations to protect your long-term vision after completing a regular diabetic eye exam.
Approximately one-third of people diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes show signs of diabetic retinopathy. With an increased risk of other vision-threatening eye diseases, having a regular diabetic eye exam is crucial to protecting vision.

Since people with diabetes risk developing severe vision problems, they should visit an eye doctor yearly to monitor their condition.
A diabetic eye exam focuses specifically on detecting signs of damage caused by increased blood sugar. Using a combination of techniques, we examine the interior structures of the eye to check for damaged blood vessels, which could be a sign of diabetic eye disease.
Uncontrolled or unmanaged diabetes is a major contributing factor to diseases like diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. Regulating blood sugar and consciously managing the disease can reduce the risk of developing diabetic eye disease.
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damaged or abnormal blood vessels forming on the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Damaged blood vessels can cut off the blood supply to the retina, which means the eye tries to grow new blood vessels. These new blood vessels can leak, causing damage because they don’t develop properly.
We cannot reverse diabetic retinopathy in most cases. Some treatments can improve vision-related symptoms; however, most diabetic retinopathy treatments focus on preventing the condition from worsening.
Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!
Surgery was amazing. Colors are bright and vivid. Everything is sharp. White is white, not off-white. Could not see like this with glasses I have worn for 67 years. Thank you, Dr. Santamaria and God bless you.
My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon. Praise God - it was the best move I made. He and his wonderful staff diagnosed a cataract in each eye. Why wasn't it seen before? I went every year for a check up. I now see better than I EVER did. I don't need my glasses. Driving is wonderful. I can read the scores on TV - It's a whole new world. I am so happy and so grateful to Dr. Santamaria and his staff! On top of their expertise, his staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and will answer any questions and concerns! Thank you again.
