Nearly 3 million Americans are affected by glaucoma. The condition is one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults. Symptoms can often go unnoticed, which is why glaucoma is so challenging to diagnose without proper testing. Glaucoma testing is especially crucial for adults over the age of 60 and those with a family history of the disease.
Glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid on the optic nerve. Over time, this fluid buildup increases pressure, damaging the optic nerve and leading to blind spots in the visual field. Other health factors can increase your risk of glaucoma, including diabetes and age.
Glaucoma typically affects people over the age of 40. Symptoms can go unnoticed for many years and become more noticeable after 60.
Glaucoma testing includes determining the health of the optic nerve and measuring intraocular pressure. Mapping the back of your eye using optical coherence tomography helps us determine the health of your optic nerve. This testing, in conjunction with an eye pressure check, is crucial to providing the data we need to diagnose glaucoma.
Signs of glaucoma include seeing halos around lights, blind spots in the visual field, severe headaches, and haziness of the cornea. Having regular eye exams is crucial to early diagnosis since these early warning signs may present themselves after glaucoma is already present..
Increased intraocular pressure can feel like your eyeball is stretched. This sensation can be uncomfortable and can sometimes cause pain. Glaucoma can also increase tearing, light sensitivity, and squinting.
Floaters aren’t typically referenced as a symptom of glaucoma. However, floaters can be a sign of retinal damage, which is sometimes associated with glaucoma.
Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!
Surgery was amazing. Colors are bright and vivid. Everything is sharp. White is white, not off-white. Could not see like this with glasses I have worn for 67 years. Thank you, Dr. Santamaria and God bless you.
My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon. Praise God - it was the best move I made. He and his wonderful staff diagnosed a cataract in each eye. Why wasn't it seen before? I went every year for a check up. I now see better than I EVER did. I don't need my glasses. Driving is wonderful. I can read the scores on TV - It's a whole new world. I am so happy and so grateful to Dr. Santamaria and his staff! On top of their expertise, his staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and will answer any questions and concerns! Thank you again.
